Palm Beach, Florida touts itself as “America’s First Resort Destination,” and with 47 miles of beaches, 170 golf courses and 1,100 tennis courts, it certainly is a go-to location for those seeking rest and relaxation their way. The area is also home to more than 200 museums, performing arts companies, indoor and outdoor venues, historical sites and cultural organizations, allowing you to add some exciting attractions to your stay.
Palm Beachis an Atlantic Coast barrier island separated from mainland Florida by the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. The heart of the town is the famed Worth Avenue, where designer boutiques, restaurants, hotels and upscale business and services create a “Rodeo Drive” atmosphere.
Cultural excitement can be found at the ?FlaglerMuseum in Palm Beach, a National Historic Landmark. The Gilded Age estate dating from 1902 once belonged to Henry Flagler, the rail main who helped develop South Florida. Hands-on fun is part of the SouthFlorida Science Museumin West Palm Beach. It includes a science center, aquarium, planetarium, museum store and observatory.
There are three venues at the RaymondF. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, where you catch ballet, pop, jazz, Broadway and opera performances.
For something different, check out the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach, the largest of its kind in the world. It includes a 19,000-square-foot clubhouse. The ?PalmBeach Kennel Club and Entertainment Complex in West Palm Beach features live greyhound racing, plus a Poker Room and restaurants.
For eco-attractions, head for Palm Beach County’s Lake Region, bordered by Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades. The Grassy Water Preserve, a community conservation center, includes two nature center pavilions, guided canoeing, hiking and biking. Be sure to hike or bike the Big Water Heritage Trail and you’ll also be able to get in some bird-watching.
Worth Avenue in Palm Beach may be synonymous with top designer shopping, but while here you’ll also find great outdoor shopping plazas and large malls, including The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens.
More than 2,000 restaurants of varying budgets and cuisine make choosing where to eat a major decision each day while in Palm Beach County. You can dine in award-winning restaurants, seaside raw bars, and the usual chain restaurants.
Palm BeachInternational Airportoffers non-stop and connecting flights from numerous cities across the U.S. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is further south, but offers another option for those flying into the region.
A rental car is the easiest way of getting around Palm Beach and Palm Beach County, though the area is serviced by both rail and bus service. A drive along A1A just for the scenery will reward you with access points to pristine beaches, nature preserves, parks, marinas and charming coastal villages.
